The staff is amazing and the trails are well maintained. One hike throughout this park will convince anyone that Central Illinois is anything but flat after plenty of elevation changes through one of the more utilized hiking sets of trails in the area. You can even register to take on their 100-mile hike challenge here and earn yourself some swag and bragging rights! One way to tie in a hike with a nice meal is to take the Pimiteoui Trail that picks up just outside of the Forest Park Nature Center parking lot and goes 2.1 miles south, connecting with Grand View Drive. Illinois River Bluff Trail - The views (especially in the fall) are beautiful. There are four access areas, so it is possible to through hike or section hike. It's a gorgeous 6.9 mile, very hilly, one-way trail…unless you make it an out-and-back. If so, plan on about 14 lovely miles round-trip. While you can begin at any of the four different PPD parks, if you start from the north side at Camp Wokanda you can expect parking, reserved camping and restroom facilities near the trailhead. Following the IRBT signs, you'll hike up about two miles into Robinson Park, where there is additional parking and restroom facilities. From Robinson Park, continue the up-and-down hilly hike towards Green Valley Camp, at mile 5.5, which is an old Salvation Army summer camp (no longer in use). On the way there, you'll pass under IL Route 6 via a tunnel for walkers. Once you reach the Green Valley Camp, you are almost to Detweiller Park…but wait! The journey still has some large ascents and descents in store for you for the last 1.4 miles. Once you've reached Detweiller Road in the park, there's a short detour across the road to pick up the last section of the trail, which ends in the main parking lot of Detweiller Park. At over 3300 acres, the refuge serves as a living laboratory for wetlands restoration techniques while still providing plenty of room for hiking, birding, paddling and wildlife watching. Hiking trails are well-kept, wide (mostly flat with some gentle hills) and marked with great interpretative signs. Seasonal paddling and fishing are also available and accessible from the middle parking area. Bicycling is available only on the Marquis Oak Ridge Trail. Make sure to take time for climbing the observation tower for magnificent views, particularly at sunset. Paddling and fishing (by boat only) are allowed by permit, obtainable at Dickson Mounds State Museum (which is also a great place for a visit, hike or picnic)! Please note that Emiquon Preserve is owned by the Nature Conservancy, while the adjacent Emiquon National Wildlife Refuge (2600 acres) is federally owned.
